Whiplash FAQ

Our Birmingham Chiropractor Gives Answers To The Most Common Whiplash Questions.

What causes whiplash?

Whiplash can occur any time the head and neck are forced to move outside their normal range of motion. It most typically occurs during car accidents, but can occur if the individual is hit in the head by an object or as the result of a sporting mishap.

Whiplash causes a severe sprain of the ligaments in the neck and straining of the neck muscles and tendons. In mild and moderate cases only the muscles, ligaments and tendons are affected. In severe cases, the vertebrae of the neck are completely thrown out of alignment and the curvature of the neck is straightened.

Could my sudden neck stiffness and shoulder pain be an indicator of whiplash?

Neck stiffness and pain as well as shoulder and back pain are definitely symptoms of whiplash. If you have recently had your head and neck stretched outside of their normal range of motion and are now experiencing head and neck pain and headaches, you should make an appointment to see our chiropractor for a full evaluation of your symptoms.

What are the symptoms of a severe neck sprain and strain?

Symptoms of whiplash include neck stiffness and pain, loss of range of motion, dizziness, severe headaches, shoulder pain and back pain. These symptoms usually appear between 24 and 48 hours after the accident. Though, some individuals do not experience severe symptoms until weeks or months after the incident. If you have recently been in a car accident, you should schedule an appointment with our chiropractor for a head, neck and spine evaluation. This is because you could be injured and not know it, and the sooner you start receiving treatments, the faster your body will heal and the better the outcome.

What treatment options do you offer for whiplash?

We offer chiropractic care, Corrective exercises. Chiropractic care is the base of whiplash treatment because, in many instances, the cervical vertebrae are straightened. When the vertebrae are thrown out of alignment, it puts pressure on the surrounding nerves, ligaments and soft tissues and impairs range of motion. This leads to neck stiffness and upper back pain as well as shoulder pain. Chiropractic adjustments can help restore the curvature of the spine and reduce pain.

How long does it take for the headaches to go away?

Your headache pain may still continue after your first few treatments. This is because it takes time for the adjustments, and treatment options to start working. Chiropractic care helps your body heal itself, and that process can seem slow. In general, most individuals can expect to feel better after several treatments, but the complete dissipation of symptoms and healing can take between six and 24 months.
